Today’s Affirmation: I am comforted by God.
In Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians in verse 4, he provides this affirmation as he writes that God… “comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When others are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.
God comforts us so we may comfort others. May we be always mindful as we walk life’s road to the hurting lives around us. May God use us to provide comfort.
We are “able”. Interesting the difference between comfort and comfortable. Do you think God has a design for us to comfortable? Was the writer of this letter of 2 Corinthians comfortable? Let’s see, he says in verse 8: “I think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and completely overwhelmed, and we thought we would never live through it.” Doesn’t sound like Paul was living comfortably.
Paul committed his life to spread the Good News, the new gospel of Jesus. Did God make him comfortable? The promise was for COMFORT. In verse 5 Paul states “You can be sure that the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ.”
Like Paul, may we commit our lives to be disciples of Jesus. May we expect to suffer and also expect that God will comfort us even more. Paul promises that as we share in his suffering we will also share in the comfort.
An important lesson that Paul learned and that we have or will learn is that “we learned not to rely on ourselves” in verse 9.
- Do you feel comfort from God?
- Do you feel a responsibility to show this same comfort to others? Did you know God comforts you SO you will comfort others?
- Do you know someone today that needs comfort?
- Are you willing to be uncomfortable for spreading the gospel of Jesus?
Lord, thank you for your comfort. Forgive me for being too comfortable in my life. May I be uncomfortable for you and rest in the fact that you will comfort me in all my troubles. I promise not to hold onto but give away your comfort. I will rely on You today.
