Today’s Scripture: Matthew 6:11, KJV- “Give us this day our daily bread.”
Life pulls us in many directions. We can become overwhelmed with the activities required of us. Shutting the world off for a few minutes and falling on our faces before our Heavenly Father gets us back on track with His daily plan for us.
When we change environments and routines it can throw us into chaos until we simply stop and turn towards the source of our daily bread and direction. In Matthew 5 and 6, Jesus continues to teach us. In fact, in Matthew 5:1 Jesus teaches us when we are surrounded by the multitudes of things and people are closing in on us. “And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him.” (NKJV)
There are times we simply need to walk away, sit down, and focus on what God wants to teach us. When we walk away from our crowded lives it is there Jesus can begin to teach us. We may not remember all of Jesus’ directions that He gave us on His sermon on that mountain, but we can remember to go to God.
When I get away in the early morning hours seeking to experience God as Jesus did, I find peace in knowing it is God, our heavenly Father who gives us our daily bread. We get so busy at times we forget to eat and at times we feast on the multitude of unhealthy options available to us.
Regardless, when we stop and walk away to be alone with God, we find the perfect balance and His perfect Spirit. As John 14:26 promises “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (NIV)
As Matthew 6:6 instructs us, “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” (NIV) Alone with God is where we find our daily bread.
Let us head the warning of Matthew 6:7 “And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.” (NIV) We must also shut out the multitude of thoughts and words bursting out of us. We can trust that our heavenly Father already knows what we need before we ask Him as Jesus said in Matthew 6:8.
God knows what this day needs and what we need. Pausing to thank God for our daily bread teaches us to trust God and not fall for trusting anything or anyone else. Regardless of what we attempt today our God knows all our days.
Alone with God is where we experience Paul’s promise in Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (NIV) The peace of God is found in His daily bread that feeds us.
Will you get alone with God today and thank Him for His daily bread?
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for our daily bread. Thank You for Jesus who came to teach us. Thank You for Your Apostles and Disciples who guide us back to You. Thank You LORD for Your Holy Spirit who feeds us and reminds us of everything Jesus came to teach us. Fill our grateful hearts LORD and guide our days to give You glory. In the name of Jesus Christ, we do pray. Amen.
