Today’s Scripture: John 6:28-29,NKJV- “Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God? Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
It is so simple to say “I believe in Jesus” yet the rebelliousness of the human spirit makes it nearly impossible for some. In the sixth chapter of John, Jesus fed the five thousand and walked on water. The crowd that had been fed were now searching for Jesus and He said to them that they were only following him because of the food that He had given them.
In John 6:27 Jesus takes those He was speaking to from the temporal to the eternal, “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” (NKJV)
John 6:28 tells us “Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” (NKJV) Many of us continue to ask what we must do to do the works of God. We have the answer given to us in John 6:29, “Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.” (NLT)
If we are only to believe in Jesus, why is it so hard? Millions of people do not believe at all. Even those of us who believe must be reminded. Surely, we believe in Jesus, right? Do we really need to say it, or simply believe? Even as long as God has had me on this affirmation of God journey, I thought to myself that surely, I have published this affirmation before. However, as hard as it is for me to believe, over the past fifteen years and 3,242 blogs I have never published, “I believe in Jesus.” Also double-checking the nearly 30,000 affirmations I have recorded, this statement has only been captured sixteen times. I am looking forward to going back and reviewing all those scriptures too that remind me to believe.
If Jesus tells us that all we must do is believe in Him, shouldn’t we? The human condition is the same today as back when the crowd asked in John 6:30 “So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do?” (NIV) Why do we keep asking Jesus what more He will do for us?
All that is required of us is to believe so that we experience John 6:35, “And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” (NKJV)
We can trust in our Heavenly Father and believe in Jesus who He sent to us. Although Jesus instructs us in Mark 16:15 to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature, it is God who convicts the heart. In John 6:44 Jesus tells us that “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.” (NKJV) We can trust God to draw the hearts that He desires when He intends.
Instead of arguing with others who do not believe, we can share why we believe and trust God to draw them in. Also, if we have been drawn by God to believe in Jesus, we must. Do you believe in Jesus?
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus to us. I believe in You Father God and Your Son Jesus Christ. Thank You for drawing our hearts to You and for giving us the bread of life . I am thankful to know that I will never hunger and thirst because Jesus has promised to raise me up to everlasting life if only, I believe. LORD, I believe in Jesus. Amen.
