How quickly can we turn from God to self? Many days I cringe when writing out these affirmations because of the focus on “I”. One of the basics of “affirmations” is to claim these things in the first person so we take ownership and believe and personalize these character traits of God. However today, as I began to read the scriptures this statement in 1 Corinthians stood out.
As the words God is Faithful jumped off the page at me it felt so right to stay away from the “I” at least for one day. After all “I” am nothing outside of God and YES, HE IS O SO FAITHFUL. Why? I have no clue. We do not deserve it, He doesn’t owe us, He just loves us and is beyond understanding faithful.
Many times we think our circumstances are about us while they are not about us at all. Some of you will find it interesting how and where I found this scripture. God will draw our eyes to what we need to see, won’t he?!
First, I was taken to 1 Corinthians 10:12 which is a verse often repeated in Celebrate Recovery as it is the verse quoted for Step 10. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! (NIV) Just be careful, whether you think you are overcoming addictions or life itself. Falling is possible especially if we take our eyes off of God. Don’t get too full of yourself!
Then I read on in verse 13: The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful…
I stopped at GOD IF FAITHFUL. It felt great and I thought there is my Facebook status for the day. I saved it as an affirmation and then read on. OK, I admit that I am not a person who remembers the addresses of scriptures often. I love to memorize scripture but I just don’t remember the chapter and verse very well. So, 1 Corinthians 10:13 did not ring a bell and it should have. But it made me more aware that IT IS NOT ABOUT ME.
You know and I know this scripture well. We pull it out many many times. Here is the rest of the story…He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. (1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV)
Did you remember that these words were in that scripture? Will you remember it next time you think you are overwhelmed in your circumstances? May we pause and just stop and remember the solution may not be about us at all. No matter what we are facing God will prove Himself to be faithful.
Have you ever experienced the fact that we are so quick to look to our own circumstances that we forget God? Has God proven Himself faithful to you? Are you in the middle of something today where you can just stop and be reminded that God is faithful and just give it to Him?

I probably rely on this attribute of God as much as, if not more than, any other of His qualities. Maybe it is because I find myself just the opposite.

Great point Cycleguy!! In our weakness He is strong. The ONLY faithfulness I have is His.
