Today’s Scripture: 1 Chronicles 10:13-14, NIV- “Saul died because he was unfaithful to the LORD; he did not keep the word of the LORD and even consulted a medium for guidance, and did not inquire of the LORD. So the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.”
Fortunately, since you are reading this message, your impatience has not caused your death as referenced with Saul in 1 Chronicles 10. However, we must learn from these passages as if our lives depend upon it.
There are times in our lives when our spirits are troubled, and we feel we need immediate answers. I had to do a Google search to find where Saul had consulted a medium and what I found was applicable to some decisions I need to make in my own life today.
In 1 Samuel 28:5 we are told “ When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart.” (NIV) Saul’s first instinct was correct in that he inquired of the LORD, however 1 Samuel 28:6 states “He asked the LORD what he should do, but the LORD refused to answer him, either by dreams or by sacred lots or by the prophets.” (NLT)
Have you ever been at a place where you cried out to God and yet you heard nothing in return? What should be our next move? The story of Saul teaches us what our next move should not be. We are not to seek advice from ungodly sources.
We must always wait on God in faith and continue to consult with His Word. Our hearts may be frantic, and our minds may tell us there is no time to wait. Yet, we must place seeking God above seeking answers. If God refuses to answer, we must refuse to move away from Him.
We know what is right and wrong in our hearts. Just a few verses prior in 1 Samuel 28:3 we read that “Now by this time Samuel had died, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in Ramah, his own city. And Saul had removed the mediums and spiritists from the land.” (BSB)
In just four short verses Saul gave up on God and “Then Saul said to his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.” And his servants said to him, “In fact, there is a woman who is a medium at En Dor.”( 1 Samuel 28:7, NKJV)
We too jump through some illogical hoops and seek advice from those our spirits know are wrong for our walk with God. Saul went as far as disguising himself and risked life and limb to sneak past the Philistine army in the middle of the night to seek advice from a medium he had previously kicked out of his land.
Did God change or did fear change Saul? I recognize Saul in myself. I have sought advise from coaches and consultants over the years who could not lead me in God’s direction. I am learning to keep asking God, have faith in Him, and continue to be faithful to His Word regardless of what anyone else may say. I also know God alone can keep me faithful.
In your ministry and life will you continue to inquire of the LORD, have faith in Him, and seek His help to keep His Word?
Today’s Prayer: LORD forgive me for being unfaithful. Please guide my spirit with Your Spirit to be faithful to You and Your Word. Thank You for Jesus who died for my sins. Please guide me with the Spirit of Christ to do only as You desire. In the name of Jesus, I am seeking Your will. Amen.
