Today’s Scripture: Psalm 36:1, NIV- “For the director of music. Of David the servant of the LORD. I have a message from God in my heart concerning the sinfulness of the wicked: There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
I am convinced that each one of us has a message within our hearts. As Jesus described being born again to Nicodemus in John 3:8, “The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” (NIV)
I also believe that we must also recognize that we all still have the sinfulness of our wicked flesh within us. It can be discouraging, irritating even, when churchy people present themselves as the authority on what others must believe. In John 3:13 Jesus reminds us that He is the ONLY one who has ever gone into heaven and come to earth to teach God’s people. We must lift Jesus and His message up, believe Him, and admit we only know Jesus.
In my quiet time with God this morning I was reminded of God’s love for us all in John 3:16. John 3:17 states that “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (NIV)
Why is it that humans feel the need to condemn others? Why is it that church leaders and others define the messages of their “followers.” Why do we mere humans, fear to let others receive the light and message of God as the Spirit delivers it? “Believers” can be bullies.
We must all stay humble in the sight of God. As John the Baptist responded to an argument about ceremonial issues in John 3:27, “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven.” (NIV)
It may not look, sound, or taste like what we know but we can trust the Messiah and the Spirit of God. We must be discerning yet we must trust the Spirit over our understanding. As John 3:30 reminds us, Jesus must become greater, and we must become less. Regardless of how strongly we feel about our understanding we must always remember John 3:31, “He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.” (NKJV)
We are all earthly. Like John the Baptist we must all point to Jesus. We can also trust John 3:34 that tells us the God gives the Spirit without limit. Why do we humans feel the need to control the Spirit of God? Psalm 36:2 warns us, “In their own eyes they flatter themselves too much to detect or hate their sin.” (NIV) Do we detect our own prideful arrogance?
Psalm 36:3 reminds us to continue to do good. Is tearing down the testimonies of others doing good? We must always remember that God placed everything in Jesus’ hands, not ours. We must simply believe in the Son.
We can trust God and Psalm 36:5 that states “Your love, LORD, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.” (NIV) Psalm 36:9 reminds us that with God is the fountain of life; in His light we see light. We can pray as David did in Psalm 36:11, “Let not the foot of pride come against me, And let not the hand of the wicked drive me away.” (NKJV)
If you know Your message is from heaven, share it if it points to Jesus, gives life to others, and is doing good.
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for loving us and sending us Your Son and Your Spirit. Thank You LORD for blowing the winds of Your Spirit upon each of us to do Your good. Help us to be fountains of life for others. May we encourage all others to share the messages from heaven that You have given them. Protect us from our evil nature and draw us into Your Spirit always. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
