Today’s Scripture: Psalm 62:1, NIV- “For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David. Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him.”
We are often looking for peace and quiet. However, what we really desire are the rest and salvation of our souls. David knew where to find it and deep down we do too. As the New King James Version records Psalm 62:1, “truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation.”
Our souls are waiting on us to wait for God. When we do, we learn the truth of Psalm 62:2, “He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken.” (NLT)
Although we do face evil and violence as David did, we can come to trust Psalm 62:5, “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.” (NIV) I can sense that David is speaking directly to his soul as if it is separate from himself. It is, this is God in us. The New Kings James Version of this same verse provides a different perspective, “My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him.” We are speaking to the soul within us to wait and expect God.
When we find ourselves restless, let us stop, get out of our thoughts and emotions, and speak to our soul. Something like, Ok Soul I am waiting silently for God and my expectation is that God will give me rest over these anxieties.
When we trust that God alone is our rock and salvation; that He is our defender, we can stay focused and not be moved into the quicksand of our feelings. God is our rock and refuge. Psalm 62:8 instructs to “Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah” (NKJV)
There is that Selah word again indicating a pause. Let us marinate in this for a moment. As we pour out our hearts to God in the silence, we can expect Him to fill our soul with rest. Now we must simply wait for Him. I always remember John 8:6-8 where Jesus bent down and started writing in the sand with His finger as the Pharisees tried to trap Him with the woman caught in adultery.
It is best too that when we feel our anxiety or anger beginning to get the best of us, that we pause, maybe even bend down and write in the sand with our fingers and wait for the Spirit of the LORD, the one true God, to fill our hearts, minds, and souls.
Our silent pause can feel like a million years, yet Psalm 62:9 points out it is only a breath. As we pour out the breath of our hearts, we can breath in God. In the silence we can expect our God to fill our souls. In Him, we truly find rest.
Today’s Prayer: Almighty God, You are the one true God. Thank You LORD for filling our souls with rest. Remind me to pause and pour out my heart with the expectation that You and Your Holy Spirit will fill me for what is needed in the moment to give us rest. In the name of Jesus Christ who teaches us to pause, Amen.
