Today’s Scripture: John 17:21, NKJV- “that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.”
At the end of the last supper and just before Jesus was taken into custody to be crucified, Jesus prayed to His Father for all His Disciples. What He spoke is mind blowing.
We cannot imagine, much less understand what Jesus is praying to the Father in John 17:21. That we all may be one. Jesus said “You, Father, are in Me, and I in You: that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.” (NKJV) It is easy to say the words that we believe that God sent Jesus to us than to grasp the Father was in Him, He was in the Father, and that we can also be one in them.
This morning, as I read these scriptures, my thoughts were so jumbled that I had to kneel before the Father and confess I could not grasp this concept. As I came to Him, I did realize that the only way I could receive and conceive these words were in the Spirit of God. I could not “see” God in Jesus, Jesus in God, nor myself in them. Yet, on the floor of my closet I could give my spirit to be in the Father and the Son and feel them in mine. We were one. You should try it now.
Then some of Jesus’ prior statements to the disciples began to make sense. He is quoted in John 15:26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.” (NIV) Again in John 16:7-11 “But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.” (NIV)
Let us be obedient to experience the Spiritual renewal that has been given to us. We must shut out the activities that distract us from God’s words. We can watch, listen, read, and participate in Easter but the deeper experience is to quieten all the noises and be alone with God the Father, His Son Jesus, and allow the Spirit to make us one. This will not just happen; we must allow The Spirit to be our advocate. In these moments we experience what Paul promised in Romans 8:11 “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”
I strongly suggest you read John Chapter 17 today. As Ellicott’s Commentary for English Readers on Biblehub.com states “Bengel speaks of this chapter as the simplest in word, and profoundest in thought, in the whole Bible. The key to the thought is in the presence of the Spirit, who shall guide into all truth (John 16:26).”
Will you welcome the presence of the Spirit?
Today’s Prayer: Father God, I am praying that I glorify You today. I am receiving Your words and Your love. I believe that upon Jesus rising from the dead that He sent the Holy Spirit to comfort and help us to live from Your word in this world while not being of this world. We welcome Your Spirit to dwell in us, so we become one with You and Jesus. Help us to live in and through Your Spirit. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
