Today’s Scripture: Matthew 6:11, KJV- “Give us this day our daily bread.”
Praying with my Heavenly Father this morning I sensed the particular importance of “this day.” The God of Heaven is with us and is providing our daily bread. Our daily bread nourishes us and sustains us to do His will.
Just last night beginning a new bible story reading with our children prompted me to reread Genesis 1 again this morning. I typically begin the hallowing of God’s name by recalling who He said He was. Almost daily I find myself attempting to recall what He did on those first six days. God still orders our days. Genesis 1:2 reminded me that the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters even before God said, “Let there be light.”
This same Spirit of God is keeping watch and still creating what is good. During my prayers, this morning I also overheard someone in another part of the house yell out to someone leaving for the day, “I love you.” In that moment I could feel in my spirit this was not just a phrase, but a heartfelt love. The Spirit of God fills our spirits with such love. When we were created in the image of God, we were created with His Spirit.
Jesus said in John 6:33 that “For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” (NIV) In John 6:34, the people following Jesus on that day said ““Sir,” they said, “give us that bread every day.” (NLT)
In John 6:35 we are told “Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.” (ESV) Keep in mind that Jesus is speaking to a crowd of people who had just witnessed His feeding of five thousand people with five loaves and two fish with twelve baskets of food left over.
They had seen what Jesus could do with their own eyes, yet they still did not get it. Jesus knew they did not understand. In John 6:36 Jesus told them “But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe.” However, it is reassuring to be reminded of Jesus’ next promise to them and us. John 6:37 “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.” (NKJV)
Jesus promises that all that come to Him will not be rejected, driven away, nor cast out. This day we can choose to go to Jesus, the bread of life. This day Jesus welcomes and accepts us. Jesus informed the people that “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” (NKJV)
On this day we can partake of the bread of life and live the will of our Heavenly Father who has sent us. Jesus tells us clearly in John 6:51,” I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” (NIV)
What will we consume this day that will give life in the Spirit of our God in heaven?
Today’s Prayer: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
