Thank You LORD for giving me life in Your ways.
Today’s Scripture: Psalm 119:37, ESV- “Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.”
The Bible can be hard for people to read. It can be overwhelming and confusing. I have grown to love God’s Word and ways. Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the bible with 176 verses. Scholars debate who the author was, but I know who the Author is regardless of the human hand that laid the words upon parchment.
We do not need to know all the details, but we must turn our eyes towards God and His Word. Today’s world is unaware of the acrostic structure of Psalm 119 because our attention spans are too short to read the 2,445 words. We live in soundbites of manipulated media.
I know, without any doubt, the LORD has revived my life in His ways. The New King James Version of Psalm 119:37 puts it this way, “Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, And revive me in Your way.” In only fifteen words God instructs us how to find life.
Whether in the days of King David or today, we all have distractions. We have our own giants, enemies, and wild animals to defeat. Tucked into the thousands of words in the bible is this solid truth, we can ask God to turn our eyes away from worthless things and to give us life in His ways and He will.
For example, we are awakened by an alarm on our phones. When we turn to snooze it or turn it off, we can find many things on these same devices that are worthless. We can choose to deny the draw of worthless information and turn our attention immediately to God who offers us life in His ways. We can spend a few seconds with our Creator instead of looking at the news reports or social media comments created by those who may even be hostile towards our God.
This is a split-second decision to look to God first. Are we giving our attention to worthless things or God? Multiple scriptures instruct us to give God our first and best. It is not a matter of the amount of time we give our attention, it is a matter of looking to God first.
Recently I read something that said going to church is not a decision made that morning, but a decision made the night before. Giving God our first look in the morning is also a decision we make the night before. We cannot wait to look and see how we feel or depend on what other events may pull us in other direction, worthless or not. We must know we are giving God whatever is first.
We can consistently ask God to turn our eyes away from looking at worthless things and to ask Him to give us life in His ways. Will you ask and thank God for giving you life in His ways?
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your ways. Please turn my eyes away from worthless things and towards you so I may continue to experience life in Your ways. Thank You LORD for awakening me and sustaining me with Your Spirit. You LORD are worthy of my first and best. In the name of Jesus I am praying. Amen.
