Today’s Scripture: Exodus 3:14, NKJV- “And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
So close and yet so far. At times we feel worlds apart from the beliefs of others. We can also feel worlds apart within ourselves. Revisiting the story of Moses’ burning bush experience with God recalls the chasm between how God sees us and how we see ourselves.
The story of Moses begins with him tending the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law near Horeb, the “mountain of God.” It was also on this mountain, after Moses had traveled to Egypt to free God’s people where we find Moses back on that same mountain receiving the Ten Commandments.
Doesn’t it seem Moses traveled a long way to get right back to where he started? We can trust that God has us where we are and knows how we are to serve Him. When the LORD called to Moses from within the burning bush in Exodus 3:4, Moses’ said “Here I am.” (NKJV)
In Exodus 3:10, God said to Moses, “Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” (NKJV) In the very next verse, Exodus 3:11, states “But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” (NKJV)
Moses sure moved extremely far in a flash, didn’t he? From here I am to who am I? We too can go from confidence to insecurity in a split second, can’t we?
In Exodus 3:12, God offered His assurance, “God answered, “I will be with you. And this is your sign that I am the one who has sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God at this very mountain.” (NLT)
We are much closer to fulfilling God’s plan than we may think or feel. The answer to Moses in Exodus 3:14 is still our answer today when we have doubts. “And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” (NKJV) God went even further by assuring Moses that He would make his way clear with the Israelites, the king of Egypt, and the Egyptian people.
Still, in Exodus 4:1 “Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, ‘The LORD did not appear to you’?” (NIV) Even after God told him and showed him miracles He would do, we are told in Exodus 4:10 “But Moses pleaded with the LORD, “O Lord, I’m not very good with words. I never have been, and I’m not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled.” (NLT)
God reassured Moses in Exodus 4:11, “The LORD said to him, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the LORD?” (NIV) In Exodus 4:12, God even assured Moses, He would help him speak and teach him what to say.
“But Moses again pleaded, “Lord, please! Send anyone else.” Exodus 4:13, NLT. God did send Aaron to support Moses, and he did complete what God knew he was going to do all along. God is going to complete what He has planned for us as well.
We only need to say to the LORD our God, “here I am.” We must resist saying “who am I.” We can trust that the I AM has defined who we are and will make our way clear. Will we act confidently today knowing the I AM (Yahweh) knows who we are?
Today’s Prayer: Yahweh, I AM, You made me to be who I am. I am trusting You LORD and being honest with You about my insecurities. Thank You LORD for promising to perform the miracles needed for me to complete Your plan for me. I am choosing to be bold in going to the people of God You send me. You are our God. Amen.
