Today’s Scripture: Proverbs 2:1, NKJV- “My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you,”
I enjoy being given clear “how-to” steps to complete a project. These days, we can YouTube just about any project. Before YouTube was created, I recall reading the second chapter of Proverbs and feeling like I had found the revelation of a step-by-step guide to complete my life. Decades later I realize that simply knowing the steps is not enough. I must act and follow God’s steps to complete His work.
Years ago I created and acrostic to remember the steps provided for us in Proverbs 2. “Really Trust In a Christ Loving Silly Sinners.”
R– receive God’s words. God’s Bible is our instruction book, and this is not a cliché. Sixty-six books of knowledge and insight that teach us the way to go. (Proverbs 2:1)
T-treasure God’s commands within us. Let us not only think about them and determine if they are still relevant, let us treasure them as the most valuable gift on earth (Proverbs 2:1)
I – incline our ears to wisdom. Are we leaning into God’s Wisdom and His communications with us or do we allow them to be drowned out by the voices of humankind. (Proverbs 2:2)
A – apply our hearts to understanding. Do we put effort into studying God’s Word and really apply ourselves? (Proverbs 2:2)
C – cry out for knowledge and discernment. How passionately and desperately do we call out to God for His wisdom, knowledge, and discernment? (Proverbs 2:3)
L – lift or raise our voices for understanding. Does God hear our voices? (Proverbs 2:3)
S – seek understanding and Wisdom as silver. Do we value the understanding, wisdom, and word of God over any other resources? (Proverbs 2:4)
S – search intently and focused on God’s understanding and wisdom as if they were hidden treasures. Are we thrilled and enriched by the treasures we find in God? (Proverbs 2:4)
Proverbs 2:5 promises “Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God.” (NKJV) “Then” is the word that caught my attention those many years ago and still today. However, I am also realizing that knowing and doing are two separate things. Even a former manager used to tell me, “Tom, you know what to do, just do it.”
I am thankful that the Wisdom of God has been given to us. I am also encouraged to act on what we know. Out of our “fear” of God we can give all we have out of our thanksgivings and reverence for our almighty God. As Proverbs 2:21 promises “For the upright will dwell in the land, And the blameless will remain in it.” (NKJV)
God has given us His steps and His Son so that we are free to live in His will. Now that we have received God’s words, let us live them.
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Words and commands. Help me LORD to live them. Father God, I am treasuring Your commands. LORD, I am inclining my ear and straining to hear You and Your Wisdom. Please grant me ears to hear. Help me LORD to apply my heart and to put into action what You have taught me. Father God, I am crying out now for discernment and understanding. Thank You for hearing our cries and equipping us for action. Lord God, I am seeking You above silver and earthly riches and I am giving out of what You give to me. Continue to show us how to complete Your will. Amen.
