Today’s Scripture: Matthew 10:28 ESV And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
I “prefer” the definition of fear to be a loving reverence and total submission kind of fear but who am I to define fear? In this tenth chapter of Matthew it is very important we read this verse in context. As we read the next three verses after we are told to fear only God. Notice the character of God Matthew is sharing with us here.
Verse 29: Our almighty God knows when a little sparrow falls to the ground and aren’t we more valuable? In verse 30 we are told the mind blowing and hard to fathom line that He knows the number of hairs on our head. Yes this is the God we are to “fear”. The God, who loves us, notices everything about us and knows us better than we know ourselves.
This was an instruction from Jesus Himself to the original twelve disciples as He sent them on their way. As we go on our way, may we only fear God. Fear Him knowing He could destroy both our soul and body in hell but He has chosen to send Jesus to save us, has a huge heart that even notices all the sparrows and He cares enough about us to know everything about us. Who else could we fear? What are your thoughts on the fear of God?
Today’s Prayer: God, You are beyond my understanding and I love You with all of my heart and all of me. Father, since You know the numbers of hairs on my head in which I have no clue I just ask You to search me and reveal things to me that only You know. I praise You Father God and go forward as Your disciple with a fear for You as my LORD. Amen

A lot of my fears come as a result of me wanting to control things. When I stop to truly think about it… and with God knowing me inside and out, I need to give up control. Thanks for your words today, Tom.

I am with you Dustin. Letting go and trusting in Him is not easy but the way. We can do it one decision at time!

I. Only. Fear. God.
That would make for an appropriate tattoo.
The fear of The LORD s the beginning of knowledge…
but fools despise wisdom and discipline, indeed.
The LORD delights in those who fear Him,
He makes His covenant known to them.
Good stuff, Tom!

Thank you Donald, so you going to get the tattoo?

Tom,
Nope. I don’t have the room.

Interesting that you posted this today … just this morning my husband was talking about the truth that we are to only fear God -and when we do He is truly God in our life. When we fear other things it is because we are trusting too much in them or ourselves — or else why fear when God is on our side? Fears can reveal misplaced trust and idols in our life. I think that is an interesting way of looking at our lives and examining what we really believe and trust.
