Today’s Scripture: Jeremiah 29:3, NIV-“He entrusted the letter to Elasah son of Shaphan and to Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to King Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon. It said:”
Have you ever heard of the names of Elasah Son of Shaphan and Gemaria Son of Hilkiah? Probably not as they were only mentioned this one time in the Bible in Jeremiah 29:3. Most of the people of their generation probably did not know their names either, yet, what they did with what they were entrusted with over 2,600 years ago, will live forever.
No one needs to remember our names either. Yet we must consider what God has entrusted with us. Who is counting on us to pass along the words that can change a person or this world for all eternity?
What would the world look like today if Elasah and Gemaria had failed to deliver Jeremiah’s letter from Jerusalem to those people that had been exiled to Babylon. We do not know the full ramifications, but we can reason that many of God’s people during this dark period would have lost hope and missed the message that God had for them.
You and I have also been given a message to deliver. In Matthew 28, after Jesus was raised from the dead, He met with the eleven remaining disciples in Galilee. Matthew 28:19-20 tells us that Jesus said “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. (NKJV)
These were the last directions that Jesus entrusted to His disciples in the book of Matthew. Just who are Jesus’ disciples? Google AI defines a disciple of Christ as a dedicated follower, learner, and adherent of Jesus, who has turned from sin, trusts in Him as Savior, and surrenders their life to Him as Lord. They actively imitate Jesus’ life and teachings, striving to be like Him in character and purpose while sharing the gospel.
You and I have been entrusted to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. Let us move forward every day with a sense of responsibility and urgency to fulfill this calling Jesus Christ himself has given us. There is someone, some nation, which is counting on us to do our part.
Let us live today as if a civilization and generation is depending on us to be faithful to that in which we have been entrusted. One moment, one relationship, one soul at a time let us deliver Jesus.
Believing that the gospel of Jesus has been entrusted to you, what is your next move?
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the servants over the years who have been faithful to deliver the words You have sent to us. Thank You for loving us so much that You sent us Your Son. Thank You Jesus for completing Your mission to be the final sacrifice for our sins. You were resurrected so that we could be called Your disciples. Help us Holy Spirit to recognize our opportunities to share the gospel and please remind us of everything Jesus has said and done to fulfill the responsibilities You have entrusted in us. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, we do pray. Amen.
