Today’s Scripture: James 1:21, NKJV- “Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”
This morning on my knees before God my ears and spirit were on high alert. I wanted to receive what God intended, and I prayed my prayers were as pleasant to Him as the songs of the birds I was hearing. My hope was that my praises were music to God’s ears. My prayer was that His Spirit would penetrate my heart and speak what He hears.
Why do we go to God in prayer? Is it to tell Him of all our troubles? Are we armed with a list of prayer requests, or do we humbly receive His words? As James 1:19 instructs us, “Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.” (NLT)
In John 16:12, Jesus told His apostles that He had much more to say, more than they could bear. When He ascended to the Father, He left the Advocate, the Spirit of Truth. John 16:13 promises us that “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.” (NKJV)
When we calm the voices in our heads and the cries of our hearts to give our first and best attention of the day to the words of the Spirit of God, we receive what saves our souls. James 1:5 gives us our first ask of every day. “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (NIV)
How many of us do not need wisdom? I have found that when I come to God the Father with an open heart, mind, and soul and not my own agenda, He provides the questions I would have never thought to ask. Jesus continues to share the good and perfect size nuggets of wisdom for our daily bread that we can bear.
Will You ask, listen, and do what the Spirit of God shares with you today?
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, I am asking You for Wisdom. I believe that Jesus went back to You so that the Spirit of Truth would continue to tell us what You desire to speak to us. Implant Your words in us Father God so that we do Your works and be used as Your instruments to help save souls. In the Spirit of Jesus Christ we do pray. Amen.
