Today’s Scripture: Colossians 2:7, NLT- Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”
What is overflowing from you? Paul reminds us that because Jesus is in us, we are overflowing. I have found the goals of Paul in Colossians 2:2-3 to be great life goals for myself. “My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
From the very beginning of this Affirmations of God journey I have referred to this process as a treasure hunt. I found that when I turned away from alcoholism and set my roots into Jesus Christ and the Words of God that I am certainly overflowing with thankfulness.
We all have hurts, regrets, fears, and pain held within us yet the Good News, the Gospel is that Jesus came to reconcile us so we would be without blemish or accusations of these other things within us. Jesus is in us and when we live in Him, we are brought into abundance.
Colossians 1:5 reminds us that faith and love spring from the hope stored up for us in heaven. (NIV) The faith and hope we find in Christ make us overflow with thanksgiving.
As Paul prayed, in Colossians 1:9-10, we can also continually ask God to fill us with the knowledge of His will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that we may live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, (NIV)
We must be careful, as Paul advises in Colossians 2:8 “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.” (NIV) There are many deceptions and evil spiritual forces at work in this world.
Let us see to it that we do not allow any other voices into us or that will be what overflows. I am praying now that we are all filled with God’s will and Spirit. Filled so much that we overflow with the life God has made us alive with in Christ as we are promised in Colossians 2:13.
Let us submit to the Spirit of God now. We should not listen to the “merely human commands and teachings” as we are warned in Colossians 2:22. I once chose the affirmations of man and overflowed with the shallow promises of the flesh. We can choose now to overflow with the life and Spirit that God has intended for us and given to us through Jesus Christ.
What will overflow from you today?
Today’s Prayer: Father God, thank You for Jesus and the hope and redemption He has filled us with. Thank You for Your Holy Spirit that fills us with thanksgivings. LORD we are praying now to be filled with the knowledge of Your will so that our thanksgivings and victories in Jesus overflow to others and share the Good News. Amen.
