Today’s Scripture: The old sinful nature loves to do evil, which is just opposite from what the Holy Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are opposite from what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, and your choices are never free from this conflict. Galatians 5:17 NLT (Tyndale)
Yes, I am a new creature in Christ and yes I still carry my sinful nature. A constant tug of war does not mean our conversion did not take but that we now are filled and aware of the Holy Spirit. For years I thought that I must have been doing something wrong as I still battled my sinful desires.
Paul states clearly here in Galatians we will never be free from this conflict. However the proof is in the fruits we are producing. Just read over Galatians 5:19-23and see where you are. We really are free in Christ as Paul says in Galatians 5:1. He says “now make sure you stay free”. Of course, he is speaking here that we should not get tied down in the law and regulations of the law but to remember that we are saved by grace and not by observing the laws. Not the laws nor listening to those who say you should never have “those” thoughts.
So we have a choice moment by moment as to who we will serve; our human nature or the Holy Spirit. Yes Paul says this is a choice that is with us constantly. May we affirm today to constantly choose the Holy Spirit. Expect the battle and expect to choose what will result in: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Not much of a choice really, is it?
Today’s Prayer: Father God, I need You and Your Spirit constantly. Help me to choose You. I am thankful Your servant Paul makes it clear that this battle will always be there as long as we are in the flesh but that You have filled us with Your Spirit. Thank You for Your Holy Spirit and for making me aware of the freedom of choice You have given me. Help me to choose You. Amen

Tom, thanks for your post today. As simple as it sounds, I want to chose Christ – my true nature, the Holy Spirit, etc.

Amen! And a ‘choice’ doesn’t require me to feel anything. It’s an act of my will. I will choose to serve God….to let go of my feelings and focus on Him…Christ in me, the hope of glory.
Praying to be filled this morning…thank you for reminding me it’s a choice to ask for the filling.
love and hugs to you my dear friend.
