Today’s Scripture: Isaiah 60:19, NIV- “The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.”
When the LORD is the light of our lives, the unreliable lights of this world dim in importance. As we trudge through life we constantly are attracted to the promise of opportunities and hope. Some lights extinguish quickly and some fade slowly over time.
Sunrises and sunsets continue to bring our spirits joy and awe. However, Isaiah here in Isaiah 60:19 reminds us that we can enjoy the everlasting light of God forever. In mere minutes sunrises and sunsets are gone for the day. The light of the LORD is everlasting.
When all other promises of light in our earthly lights fade there is only one light that remains and that is the everlasting light of God. Regardless of our circumstances or the current spotlight of today’s news, the light of the LORD, in all its glory, shines through.
Once we know the light of the LORD is above all things, all other things diminish in importance. So many times we think that there must be more to life than this and there is. Whatever we can see in the world’s light can blind us for a season yet when that light fades the everlasting light of God remains.
Many times, I am reminded of a time when I was sitting by my grandmother’s bedside as her light of life was dimming and she asked me a question. She was only semi-lucid and after she had asked me about heaven she dropped a question on me that still haunts me. My Nana asked me “what have you done”? I asked her what she meant and to this day I still haven’t received her answer, mine, or God’s.
What have I done? When I meet Jesus face-to-face, will He have to ask me? Will He want my most recent sales report or want to know my quota for next year? Will he ask me if I have made my bed? I am hopeful to have shared God’s everlasting light. Long after I am gone to where my grandmother went, I hope others will continue to see the everlasting light of God.
Isaiah 60:20 reminds us that there will be a day when “Your sun will never set again, and your moon will wane no more; the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your days of sorrow will end.” That day is coming for all of us.
Our “whys” must be behind everything we do. Our whys are the reason we do what we do day in and day out. Do we work only for a paycheck, or we work to make a difference in our family’s lives? Have we lived certain experiences only so we could experience them? Have we come this far only to come this far?
I believe we have come here to leave our everlasting experiences and light. In Isaiah 61:1-3 he stated “The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor.” Now that is a mouthful and a huge why.
I am not saying we have all been called to be a prophet like Isaiah but I am saying we each have the everlasting light of God to share. We have seen God’s light rise in our lives. I am hoping we all remember why we are here. We are here to live in and share God’s everlasting light.
What have you done?
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for your everlasting light and everlasting covenant with us. LORD, help us to continue to look to Your light when we are blinded by our flesh and our world today. Remind us LORD of Your everlasting purpose for each of us. Help us proclaim Your good news. Help us to help heal the brokenhearted, help us to free those who are imprisoned by darkness. Help us LORD to share Your beauty, joy, and praise. In Your Spirit and Light I do pray. Amen.
