Today’s scripture: Psalm 107:2, NIV- “Let the redeemed of the LORD tell their story— those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,”
Most days, I am overwhelmed by the word of God, shocked really. I am not a person who remembers the chapter and verse of most scriptures. I am, many times, totally surprised when I realize I have arrived at a familiar verse. God takes me places I am not even aware I am going.
I will never tire of the shock and awe of God. His timing is mind-blowing, and He changes my perspectives constantly. I can never settle into thinking I have read the scriptures, so I am done. I often smile and chuckle at how differently I can think, feel, or relate to a particular scripture on any given day. Although some strongly disagree with reading of various translations, I have learned that different translations speak to me differently and can hit me in a spot yet realized.
We can receive the scriptures with the expectation, excitement, and surprise of a Christmas morning. God hits us where we are living today. God’s word is living and made fresh each and every day. For example: Psalm 107:2 is typically memorized as “Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy;” (KJB) I wondered, what does “redeemed” even mean.
Online I found from the KJV Dictionary: “To purchase back; to ransom; to liberate or rescue from captivity or bondage, or from any obligation or liability to suffer or to be forfeited, by paying an equivalent; as, to redeem prisoners or captured goods; to redeem a pledge.”
I felt thankful that God liberates and rescues us. Psalm 107:2 says that if we have been redeemed, we should say so. The NIV reminds us that we each have a story, which I harp on constantly, so we should tell it. We have different foes at different times in our lives and we should tell how God has rescued us.
We are or have been prisoners to hurts, habits, or hang-ups, if we are being honest. In Lesson 1 of Celebrate Recovery there is a reference to Psalm 107:13 which states “In their distress they cried out to the LORD, He saved them from their troubles.” (GWT). God does save us from our troubles when we cry out to Him. Now that we are rescued, we should tell our story of how God saved us so, others too, may be saved.
Will you tell others how God as redeemed you?
Today’s Prayer: Thank You LORD for Your Word. Thank You LORD for hearing our cries when we call out in our distress. Lord God, thank You for rescuing us and saving us with Your Son Jesus Christ. Help us to be bold LORD in telling others about how You have redeemed us. Thank You LORD for Your unfailing love and wonderful deeds for all of us. Thank You for satisfying our thirsts and hungers with good things. Please accept our stories of Your redemption as offerings of joy. Amen.
