Today’s Scripture: Matthew 11:28, NKJV- “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
When we go with Jesus, we find ourselves above and beyond human existence. We must pause and shut out the noises and demands of life. To go to Jesus, we must disconnect from all other things. Coming to Jesus requires a personal connection.
Just as Jesus can seem foreign to a lost world, His rest is also a rest the world does not know. Jesus said “come to Me.” Jesus, teach me how to come to You. There is action in going to Jesus. This is not a mindless rest but a yearning rest and focus.
This seems odd and beyond explanation but when I am alone with God, and I breathe out a prolonged word “rest” for Jesus I find a spiritual connection. An emptying of myself so I know the Spirit of God. When I combine looking up to the light of God through my closed eyes and breathe out the word rest for a moment, I feel a connection to God physically and spiritually.
In Matthew 11, Jesus was responding to the disciples of John the Baptist who had come to ask Jesus if He was the One who had been promised in prophesy. Jesus responded by telling them to return to John and tell him what they had seen and heard. In a way, I am telling you what I have seen and heard as weird as it may be. There is something to be found in the silence and darkness alone with Jesus.
Jesus asked the people in Matthew 11:7, NIV- “As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?” What do we expect when we go into our wilderness with God? Do we expect more of what the world and flesh can provide or do we expect God.
We must desire God and be willing to act on His behalf. We must move beyond our flesh and then take action to share with others what we have seen and heard. Is it easy? No. John did not have it easy out in the wilderness eating locusts. He was committed to telling all who came to Him about God and the coming Messiah. He baptized those willing to give themselves up to God.
We can give ourselves up to God. We can get alone with God and be fed, and we come to recognize the connection. Acting keeps us connected. I have experienced the rest of Jesus and all I want to do is share what I have seen and heard. I am seeking to learn how to stay and live in this experience. It is easy to turn away yet nowhere we turn provides the rest of Jesus.
Do you desire to know Jesus’ rest? Go out into your wilderness and look for God and you can expect to find Him, His rest, and purpose.
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, I desire to know the rest of Jesus. Thank You LORD for taking the rest I can give and drawing me to Your light. I thank You LORD for Your Holy Spirit Who resides in me. Help me to live in Your presence and go and live from You. I am expecting to experience You LORD and to share with others what I have seen and heard. Use our experiences LORD to bring others to You so they too may know You and bring all others closer to You. In You Jesus, I do find rest. Amen.
