Today’s Scripture: James 1:5, BSB- “Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”
Do you ever count the ways that God is generous with you?
I watched a reel the other day where someone was resharing the concept that the name for God, YHWH (Yahweh), is produced every time we open our mouths and breath in and out. Without any other muscles required of us, when we breathe in through our relaxed and opened mouths, it sounds much like Yah and when we breath out it sounds like weh. Ok, you are trying it now, aren’t you?
This makes me relate to David’s heart in Psalm 150:6 “Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD!” (NKJV) During my annual heart ultrasounds I hear the whooshing sounds that go on that most take for granted. The blood pulsing within us also sings praises to our maker whether we are consciously aware of Him or not.
James 1:6 reminds me of the basis of affirmation. “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” (NIV) Let us claim God’s words as if they have already been given to us. Believe that God is who He says He is without doubting.
James 1:12 is clear that we receive the blessings of life if we simply love God. As we breath in and out our love to God we are crowned with a gratitude-filled life. Loving God over all other things keeps us from being distracted. We can rest in the truth of James 1:17 “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” (NIV)
James 1:21 instructs us to humbly accept the word planted in us that saves our souls. Our own understanding and strength cannot save our souls any more than it can control our breathing and pulse.
Another great aspect of James 1:5 is that our God is generous without finding fault. I confess that I can too easily find faults in others. All too often Christians find faults in other believers by placing their expectations on them. We are too critical of ourselves and others.
Our God is generous without reproach. A quick Google AI search to understand what reproach means hits home.
“Key Aspects of “Without Reproach” in James 1:5:
No Disapproval: God is not annoyed or disappointed that you have to ask for help, but rather welcomes it as a sign of dependence on Him.
No Past Condemnation: He does not look at your previous foolish choices or failures when deciding to give you wisdom. (or anything -added by me)
Generous Giving: The phrase emphasizes that God’s nature is to give freely and willingly, rather than begrudgingly or with a lecturing attitude.
Constant Availability: It indicates you can approach Him frequently; He does not complain that you have already asked too many times.”
Too often the body of Christ lectures others on how they are to live their beliefs. If we focus more on loving God and loving as He did, we will know more of His generosity and experience it in our hearts. This, in turn, encourages everyone to be more generous with the gifts God has so generously given to us.
Are you thankful that our God, YHWH, is generous?
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your generosity. I am praising You from the bottom of my heart. I am praying to do as You expect and remember You with every breath. Please help me to remember and do everything that is in Your perfect law. Thank You for the gift of Your only Son, Jesus Christ, who keeps us unstained from this world. Amen.
