Today’s Scripture: Matthew 6:25, NKJV- “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”
Reading through Matthew 5-7, which was Jesus’ “sermon on the mount” where He was teaching His disciples and us. We are told that those with Him on that day were astonished at His teaching. I find myself astonished and overwhelmed. Jesus covers life and I find my only hope for more of life is Jesus.
Jesus was teaching us to be the opposite of our nature. To live as Jesus teaches we need less of us and more of Him. We must have the faith and beliefs as the centurion who came to Jesus in Matthew 8:5-13. We can go and believe as Jesus told the centurion; “Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.”
I believe I can live the life Jesus calls us to live only through the power and presence of Jesus. My nature leads me along the wrong path but the life God created for us is found in the teachings of Jesus. The same power of God that brought Jesus to us brings changes in our beliefs, actions, and results.
In Matthew 6:25, we are instructed not to worry. Worry. What a strange word and strange practice. Have you ever looked up the definition of worry? Do not worry, I just did it for you at dictionary.com: torment oneself with or suffer from disturbing thoughts; fret.
Why do we choose to torment ourselves? God knows what we need. The Lord does provide our daily bread just as Jesus taught us to pray in Matthew 6:11. Jesus told us in Matthew 6:8 that the Father knows what we need before we ask. He knows what we REALLY need.
Although we try to serve ourselves and this world, Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:24 that we cannot serve two masters, much less three. We must only serve God and trust God. We simply cannot do or be who God calls us to be without the same power Jesus lived in. The power and provision of God is our only hope to live a life of more that Jesus taught us.
In Matthew 6:31, Jesus advises “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ and again in Matthew 6:34, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
Ok, Jesus is clear that we should not worry. We should not torment ourselves. We are to fully trust and believe that God will give us our daily bread and even more today. Do You believe God will give you more today as Jesus promised?
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the teachings of Jesus. We believe You have given us Jesus and His power to live the life You intend. I believe You are at work and will give me the daily bread that You desire. I am receiving Your bread and promises of healing and hope. Continue to teach me and use me to trust in Jesus over my understanding and ways. I am asking to live in the ways of Jesus where I find more of You. Amen.
