Today’s Scripture: 2 Corinthians 3:17, NIV- “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
Where are you going today? Is it time for a new direction? If a journey of a million miles begins with one step, let us turn and step towards the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3:16 promises “But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.” (NIV)
Fifteen hundred years before the writing of 2 Corinthians we were told in Exodus 34:33 that after Moses finished giving the Israelites all the commands LORD had given them, he put on a veil to cover his face. In Exodus 34:34 we are told that whenever Moses entered the Lord’s presence to speak with Him, he removed the veil until he came out.
It is interesting that 2 Corinthians 3:15 states “But even to this day, when Moses is read, a veil lies on their heart.” (NKJV) The preceding verse shares the crossroads of the old and new covenants for us. In 2 Corinthians 3:14 Paul points out that “But their minds were closed. For to this day the same veil remains at the reading of the old covenant. It has not been lifted, because only in Christ can it be removed.” (BSB)
Only Jesus Christ could bring us the New Covenant. Instead of attempting to understand God’s laws written on stone, 2 Corinthians 3:6 promises that God has “made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” (NKJV)
In the Spirit of God, that Jesus left with us, is life and freedom. As Paul put it in 2 Corinthians 3:3 “It is clear that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.” (BSB)
If we want the freedom of a living God, we must turn our spirits to His Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18 promises “So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.” (NLT)
Reading in Exodus this morning to learn more about the veil it struck me that God said to Moses in Exodus 23:30, “Little by little I will drive them out ahead of you, until you become fruitful and possess the land.” (BSB)
Let us dwell in God’s Spirit and never be discouraged. Just because we are not where we thought we would be at this moment, the LORD and His Spirit are getting us to our land of promise little by little to be more and more like Christ.
In recovery we are encouraged to do the next right thing. One day at a time and one step at a time we find sobriety. In God, as we turn to do the next thing the Spirit of our Lord guides us to do, we find freedom and life.
Where will you turn today?
Today’s Prayer: Father God, thank You for the covenants of Moses that protect us. Thank You LORD for sending Jesus to us to bring us the New Covenant of grace and Spirit. I am turning to You now LORD and seeking Your Spirit. Thank You Holy Spirit for Your faithfulness to teach us and lead us. Help us to be more and more like Jesus, the Christ of our Living God. Amen.
