Today’s Scripture: Matthew 6:8, NKJV- ““Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.”
Matthew 6:7 advises us not to pray with vain repetitions. Ok, I admit I tend to babble. I am aware that I repeat myself over and over. Since I am aware, I must stop myself in daily conversations and especially in my time with God. Here in Matthew 6, we are encouraged to meet God in His secret place. As we join Him we must calm our spirits and our mouths.
Do we have vain repetitions in our prayers where we spend more time asking from our vanity than simply seeking to know what God knows? Matthew 6:8 tells us that God already knows what we need before we even ask. We do not always know what we need. Most times we see what we want or wish for.
When we pray to God in secret are we opening our hearts, minds, and souls to receive what God knows and desires for us and all others? This is not about us. This is about God and His will. We can fight and scream and scratch and claw for what we want. However, we can only see so far. In fact, we cannot fathom what God knows.
Whether we can see or understand does not change who God is or what He knows. We can accept and trust that God’s will supersedes our understanding and efforts. Jesus has taught us to pray. Our Lord’s prayer begins here in Matthew 6:9 with “Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.” (NKJV)
Hallowed, defined, means we are acknowledging the holiness of God. He alone is holy. I have read that this word is capitalized our of our respect for God. We must enter into our prayers with respect and acknowledgment of who God is and trusting He already knows what we are about to pray.
We are in our secret place for The Holy One to reveal what He knows. I am thankful that God already knows and I am trusting Him over the whims and limitations of what we know. Do you trust what God knows?
Today’s Prayer: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
