And what does the LORD your God require of you?
Does that question make you pause? Yes Lord please tell me what I need to do to have all you have promised me. Tell me Lord what it is, I will do it. In Deuteronomy 10:12 Moses poses this question to the people of Israel prior to them going in to take possession of the land God was giving them.
God has given each of us a land too. Do you want to go in and take possession of it? What do we need to go and take possession of what God has planned for us? We are given the secret to living out our life’s purpose by following Deuteronomy 10:11-12
You ready for the answer?
“…fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments of the LORD and His statutes which I command you today for your good?” (NIV)
O man there are those commandments that trip me up. Moses had brought ten of them down from the mountain and I have blown several of them. It is here that Moses says in 11:13 that he commands them to “to love the LORD your God and serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, (NIV)
I always found it interesting that when the Pharisee’s tried to trick Jesus by asking Him the most important commandment that He didn’t give them one of the original ten. He gave them what Moses says here: “to love the LORD your God and serve Him with all your heart and all your soul.” The spirit of the law and not the letter of the law. The legalistic Pharisee’s were looking to the law while the LORD was looking to the heart and soul.
So what is required of us? To love Him with all of our heart and with all of our soul. Now let’s go boldly into the land He is giving us.
What are your thoughts on Deuteronomy 10 and 11? What do you try to do to please God?

It will depend on how i see the fear used here. Since i believe the fear is the reverence for God that is essential, I can only see one proper reaction. trust. That leads me to please god out of joy rather than the wrong kind of fear.
Thanks Bill, I understand you. I too see fear as a loving reverence and respect for God. Just curious, this is a direct quote from scripture, how do you think Moses would have defined it? I have a loving reverence because of what Jesus showed us as well as a respectful amount of trembling fear for a sometimes jealous and all powerful God. I do hesitate to put the word “fear” out there due to how we use it today and how God has been missused by mankind. I love your perspective…praying for your services Sunday!
