Sometimes I struggle with publishing an affirmation that says I do what is right because I don’t. I have to remind myself that these are Affirmations of who God is calling us to be and possibly not where I am this very moment. But, I will continue to affirm the character of God until it is deeply engraved on the tablets of my heart.
Sitting in a hunting blind just before dusk I was looking through the book of Micah and came across Micah 6:8 where today’s affirmation is taken:
He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God? (NKJ)
God’s Word Translation puts the request in today’s terms:You mortals, the LORD has told you what is good. This is what the LORD requires from you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to live humbly with your God. (GWT)
Sitting there in the quietness of the woods those words scream loudly and speak to my heart like it has so many times with this verse. Every time I read “And what does the LORD require of you?” It seems my ears perk up and my senses heighten as I so desire to do what the LORD requires of me. Remind me again LORD, what is it?
What Micah was instructing the people of Israel and Judah in their day still stands for us today, doesn’t it? How would you answer this question he posed to them in Micah 6:6 what should I bring when I come into the LORD’s presence, when I bow in front of the God of heaven? Should I bring him year-old calves as burnt offerings? (GWT)
Micah kind of chides them here and shows the how ridiculous it seems that all God wanted was rituals. Verse 7: Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, Ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? (NKJ)
NO, what DOES He require of us?
- Do what is just/ right.
- Love mercy /kindness
- Live humbly with our God
Is that asking too much? I think not. We can do this. This is not an overwhelming request. I can choose to do what is right. I can love and have a heart for kindness and just be humble, ditch my pride and live with my God. This is a very personal God feel your heart saying YES God this is all I want. ALL I want God is to do as You require.
Thank you God for making this doable. I totally do not have 1000 Rams or 10,000 rivers of oil but I can do what is right, love mercy and live humbly with You.
What does Micah 6:8 say to you? Do you think you can do this?
