Today’s Scripture: Genesis 12:1, NIV- “The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.”
Humans spend a lot of time and energy questioning what they are doing now and wondering if there is something else, we should be doing. Some of the most frustrating times in life are when we cannot see what is coming next and feel God is silent when we are crying out for what we should do next.
Throughout my years of recovery, I have heard and said many times, “ just do the next right thing.” I used to think that Alcoholics Anonymous had produced this slogan. However, according to Google AI in 1933, two years before AA was founded, Psychiatrist Carl Jung wrote to a patient, “If you always do the next thing that needs to be done, you will go most safely and sure-footedly along the path prescribed by your unconscious.”
Even earlier in 1874, Friedrich Nietzsche wrote “No one can build you the bridge on which you, and only you, must cross the river of life. There may be countless trails and bridges and demigods who would gladly carry you across; but only at the price of pawning and forgoing yourself. There is one path in the world that none can walk but you. Where does it lead? Do not ask, walk!”
Although humankind has been attempting to understand how to travel our best paths. The Bible taught us, approximately four thousand years earlier, that we must simply go. It was God who provided the most sure-footed path, and it is the LORD who builds the bridge only we can cross to fulfill our lives. The LORD told Abram to go and promised that He would show him the land He wanted him to go to. Too often we want to know where we will end up before we simply go. I am thankful to know that God will show us, as He promised Abram, where to go.
I have learned that if I will just go to God in prayer or go to His Word, He is faithful to show me where to go. When we go and do as God directs us, we experience His blessings and identify how we can be a blessing to others as the LORD promised Abram in Genesis 12:2 “I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.” (NKJV)
We know the blessings of God when we allow Him to make us and take us on our life’s journey. Wherever we go we can call on the name of the LORD as Abram did in Genesis 12:8. Our journey will not always be easy. Abram faced severe famine in the land, so he went down to Egypt to live for a while as we are told in Genesis 12:10.
We too will experience detours in our lives where we may stay for a while, but we are still being shown by God where we are to go. We must also be patient and trust the LORD as we will face battles in our journeys. You and I can trust the word of the LORD as was told in Genesis 15:1, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”” (NKJV)
We can trust the LORD as He is our navigator, our protector, and our eternal reward. Genesis 15:6 tells us, “ And Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD counted him as righteous because of his faith.” (NLT)
Let us go, believe that the LORD has the plan for our lives, and have faith that He will show us His way.
Today’s Prayer: LORD, I believe that You will show me where to go. In faith, I am going and doing what Your Spirit guides me to do. Please show me the next righteous thing to do. Amen.
