Today’s Scripture: 1 Samuel 8:7, NKJV- “And the LORD said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.”
The Israelites of first Samuel cried out for a king to lead them. Many people today are still looking for a king. Instead of an earthly king we all need to accept the King of kings. God, our King, knows when we are rejecting Him and seeking security in any other person or thing.
Instead of crying out for an earthly leader, we must join our voices to cry out for the LORD God to reign over us. As the LORD promised to Saul in 1 Samuel 10:6, we too must realize that when the Spirit of the LORD comes upon us, He turns us into another person.
1 Samuel 10:9 stated, “As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart, and all these signs were fulfilled that day.” (NIV) The King James version says God gave him another heart. God still changes our hearts.
We will fulfill God’s will when we live from the heart He gives to us. The Spirit of God comes powerfully upon us as He did with Saul in 1 Samuel 10:10. God also surrounds us with others whose hearts He has touched as He did in 1 Samuel 10:26.
We must always celebrate the LORD and be careful not to reject God for the leaders He sends to us. Samuel reminded the Israelites of how God answered their cries with Moses and Aaron, and he also reminded them of how they then forgot the LORD their God.
Let us not forget the LORD our God. Samuel’s words in 1 Samuel 12:14 remain true today; “Now if you fear and worship the LORD and listen to his voice, and if you do not rebel against the LORD’s commands, then both you and your king will show that you recognize the LORD as your God.” (NLT)
We should pray for our earthly leaders to accept the LORD and receive His Spirit. We are warned in 1 Samuel 12:15, “But if you do not obey the LORD, and if you rebel against his commands, his hand will be against you, as it was against your ancestors.” (NIV) Samuel gave us the words we must live by in 1 Samuel 12:24 “Only fear the LORD, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you.” (NKJV)
When we focus on the great things God has done for us instead of dividing our hearts with the fear of man, we find the strength and courage to be obedient. 1 Samuel 15:24 also warns us, “Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.” Let us not fear what people can do to us nor listen to their voices.
When we listen to and fear the LORD, this keeps us in touch with the new heart He has given to us. The Spirit of the LORD still comes powerfully upon our hearts. Let our hearts accept the reign of the LORD our God today.
Today’s Prayer: LORD God, thank You for being our one and only King who reigns over us. Thank You LORD for giving us another heart, Your heart. Thank You LORD for Your Spirit that comes powerfully upon us. We are praying now to have an undivided heart. We do pray for our ourselves and our leaders to only fear You and to always obey Your commands. In the name of Jesus Christ we do pray. Amen.
