Today’s Scripture: John 4:34, NKJV- “Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.”
We are all consumed with so many tasks to perform every day, sometimes we can even forget to eat. Our hunger pains remind us to eat food. In John 4 the disciples were concerned because Jesus was not eating.
Jesus knew what He was doing with the lady at the well. He was conducting and feeding off His most important task, the purpose for which God sent Him to the earth to complete. Jesus was offering His living water.
It is my belief that God has also sent each of us to earth to complete His work. Even in my retirement I have so many tasks to do, it is easy not to focus on the work I have been sent to complete.
Interestingly in my quiet time this morning, the Spirit took me on an extended journey of the daily bread portion of the prayer that Jesus gave us. Most days I do ask for the daily bread that my heavenly Father wants me to feed others. However, this morning I found myself praying for others within my household to be fed, then the neighborhood, local community, state, nation, and world.
Feed us LORD and help us distribute Your living water in Jesus Christ. I feel my most important task is to share the bread the LORD gives to me in prayer and scripture reading. I fall short many days and allow the demands of life to distract me. Jesus was not distracted.
When we face difficult circumstances, we are often told to dig deeper. In Luke 6:47-48 Jesus said “Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.” (NKJV)
Somewhat cosmic, last night I had to pray because I could feel my anger and hear a tone that was not godly. I prayed for God to help me. Oddly, I felt levels within myself. I could tell where my feelings were coming from that were spilling out of my mouth. It felt that my reactions were coming from a shallower place than where I feel the Holy Spirit. As I dug deeper, I did have a breakthrough. My anger subsided and the care and compassion of the Spirit overwhelmed my emotions.
For a few moments, I consciously switched back and forth to feel the difference. Jesus told the woman at the well in John 4:23 that the time was coming when true worshipers would worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth. John 4:24 tells us “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” (NIV)
We must dig deeper than our minds and emotions to get in touch with the Spirit of God. I am convinced this is why Jesus set the example for us to get alone with God. In the quietness and stillness of no other distractions is where we come to recognize the Spirit of God within us.
What we find in the Spirit is the will and work that the Father has for us. All other things, food included, seem unimportant. We are fed by doing the will of the Father. Let us dig deep today to the foundation of Jesus Christ and complete God’s work.
Today’s Prayer: Thank You Heavenly Father for teaching us to worship You in Spirit and truth. Thank You for Your daily bread and the living water of Jesus Christ. Help us LORD to dig deep into Your Spirit so we are secure in the works You have given each of us to complete. In the name of Jesus Christ, our Messiah, we do pray to live in Your Spirit. Amen.
