Today’s Scripture: Psalm 27:4, ESV- “One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple.”
When you awake in the morning what is the one thing you seek? We have many things on any given day seeking our attention yet when we turn our sole attention to our LORD all other things fall into order.
The very first verse of Psalm 27 sets our days and our lives in order. “A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” When we follow the LORD’s prayer given to us by Jesus Himself to His disciples, we can hallow His name.
Hallowed can be defined as setting apart the name of the LORD, as holy and sacred. When we seek God first and set Him apart, we are welcomed into His light, and we catch glimpses of the beauty of the LORD.
I have never forgotten how one morning early in my recovery from alcoholism as I hallowed God and was gazing upon His beauty as The Creator of all things, I caught a vision of snow-capped mountains across the globe and at that moment I thought I felt a buzz. It was then that I realized that in gazing upon the beauty of the LORD, He gives us what we need and desire.
Looking to God and His beauty we also realize how small all other things we face today are. We do not fear our to-do list, we trust God to order our to-do’s. We can be confident that at the end of the day, God will still be on His throne, loving, protecting, and providing for us.
As we start our day bowed before His throne, He opens our eyes and hearts with thanksgiving and awe. We learn to trust God. As David mentions in Psalm 27:6, on our faces before God, we can make sacrifices of joy and sing praises to our God. Strangely, our eyes and our hearts are drawn to the beauty of God.
We can make certain God hears our voices in the morning. I am often reminded in the darkened mornings in the woods how the birds begin to sing. Most mornings as I am praying in a tree stand, I think to myself, that I hope the LORD is hearing my prayers, my voice, as beautifully as the birds are lifting their voices in the silence. This is why I “hunt.” I am in God’s nature for the life He brings to me versus any life that I may take.
As we seek the LORD’s face as David references in Psalm 27:8, somehow, we see God with the eyes of our hearts. We cannot explain it but somehow God takes us up into new heights and changes our perspectives. In these quiet moments before the storms of life are where we experience God teaching us as David mentions in Psalm 27:11.
Like David’s experience in Psalm 27:13, we get to see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living. As we wait on the LORD as David in Psalm 27:14 we find courage and strength that can only come from our LORD. I am praying you will gaze upon the beauty of the LORD with me today.
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You LORD for opening our eyes to see Your beauty. Thank You LORD for Your creation, blessings, and provision. LORD hear the shouts of joy from our hearts and the music of our praises to You. You alone do I seek Father God and I am praising You in Your temple. You alone do I fear, and I am trusting You to order our days. In Your hallowed name I do pray. Amen.
