Today’s Scripture: Psalm 37:5, NLT- “Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you.”
David really does mean everything in Psalm 37:5, do we? The most freeing skill I have learned in recovery is that we can give anything that is making our lives unmanageable to the LORD. Alcoholism was only the gateway to revealing to me that I must commit everything to God. Anger, worry, and disobedience are only a few such things. Do you have anything you need to commit to the LORD now?
In Week six and day five of the Re:generation groundworks guide entitled “Look to the one who can” I experience relief in knowing that I cannot. My ego is comforted when I recall Romans 7:18 where Paul, who wrote almost half of the New Testament, confessed “And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t.” (NLT)
As with Paul and David, it is great news that we can always look to the ONE who can! Not only can we look to our LORD, but we can trust Him. Step three in Re:gen is Trust: We decide to trust God with our lives and wills by accepting His grace through Jesus Christ.
When we step out in faith and trust God with everything, we do find forgiveness and God’s strength. As David said in Psalm 37:3 “Trust in the LORD and do good; Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.” (NKJV) Out of God’s faithfulness He gave us Jesus Christ.
Reading other translations of Psalm 37:5 I realize that God does not just help us, He is the one who does it. God created us so He knows our nature and inability to do good without Him. Do we really think God would leave the fulfillment of His will up to us?
We were created to be reliant upon God and His goodness. So, let us give Him our good, bad, and ugly and trust Him. I am learning to also give Him the ways of this world that are out of control and hopeless.
The beliefs and actions of others are unmanageable by us. These too we must commit to our LORD. The wickedness all around us and out in the streets is not a surprise to God. The weapons have changed since the times of David, but the hearts of humans have not. As he wrote in Psalm 37:14 “The wicked draw their swords and string their bows to kill the poor and the oppressed, to slaughter those who do right.” (NLT) We can still trust Psalm 37:17 “For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, But the LORD upholds the righteous.” (NKJV)
When we accept and confess that we cannot be righteous without God, He is faithful to hold us up. He also promised in Psalm 37:24 “Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand.” (NKJV) We can also rest in the facts of Psalm 37:39 “The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; He is their stronghold in time of trouble.” (NIV)
Will you give everything to the LORD and trust Him today with any of your troubles?
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father thank You for loving us and protecting us. Out of our gratitude we give You everything. We trust You and Your will LORD. Thank You for protecting us from wickedness and placing us firmly in the land You have for us. In You LORD we trust and commit our hearts, minds, souls, and strengths. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are praying. Amen.
