Today’s Scripture: John 3:15, NKJV- “that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”
Who can understand eternal life but Jesus? We may not understand but we must believe in Jesus. John began the book of John with these words in John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
We are told of how John the Baptist witnessed for Jesus in John 1:15, “John testified about him when he shouted to the crowds, “This is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘Someone is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for he existed long before me.’” What? Someone coming after you was here long before you?
John the Baptist was also quoted in John 1:33 that, “And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ John did not have to know he just needed to do as God had sent him to do.
John 2:22 tells us “After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.” We are also told in John 3 that Nicodemus, the Pharisee, and member of the Jewish ruling council did not understand when Jesus said in John 3:3 “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
Jesus knew Nicodemus knew the laws of Moses and referenced Numbers 21:6 where we were told that as long as the Israelites looked to the snake on Moses’ pole, they could look at it and live. As long as we look to Jesus we will live.
Like the people in the desert, we are ungrateful at times and wonder why we are where we are. Amid the consequences of our disobedience, we can still look to Jesus. We are learning to grasp Jesus’ words in John 3:6, “Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.” Believing in Jesus will never come from our flesh, it is the Spirit of God shining His light into our spirit.
Let us look to Jesus and believe in Him and we will live a fuller life now and a heavenly life forever as we believe the words of John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Do you believe?
Today’s Prayer: Our Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Word to us. Thank You for Jesus who was with You in the beginning and came to earth to share heaven with us. Help us to believe LORD with Your Holy Spirit. Help us LORD to recognize Your Spirit by confessing that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh so we can live with You forever. In the saving grace and name of Jesus Christ, we do pray and confess our belief. Amen.
