Today’s Scripture: Hebrews 3:7, NKJV- “Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you will hear His voice,”
What voices are we listening to today? We must listen intently for God’s voice. The Holy Spirit is urging us to listen because Hebrews 3:6 states, Jesus Christ is our confidence and our hope.
Hebrews 1:1-2 tells us that in the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son. Hebrews 2:1 states that “We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.” (NIV)
I think most of us must confess that we spend very little time listening for the voice of God. For the sake of time management many welcome God’s voice while we are doing other things but how often do we set aside all other things simply to listen for the voice of God? As Hebrews 2:14 reminds us, Jesus shared in our humanity so he could break the power of the devil.
Jesus also showed us in His humanity the critical nature of going to be alone with God to pray and listen. As Matthew 14:23 stated “And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there.” (NKJV) Mark 6:46 mentions that “After telling everyone good-bye, he went up into the hills by himself to pray.” (NLT)
John 6:15 in part again stated, “He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.” Again, in Luke 6:12 we are told “And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.” (KJB) Later in Luke 22:39-41 we are shown that “Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, (NKJV)
Three times here in Hebrews 3 and 4 the Word of God says, “Today you must listen to his voice.”Hebrews 3:13 instructs us that “You must warn each other every day, as long as it is called “today”, that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God.” (NLT) We will find God’s rest and His voice if we will listen to His voice.
Today, will you listen?
Today’s Prayer: Father God, thank You for speaking to us. Help us to listen and help us to hear. You are in all things, LORD, and You speak in all things. Holy Spirit, help us to hear God’s voice. LORD, today, I am listening. I am trusting You Father God, to allow me to hear Your voice. Amen
