Today’s Scripture: Psalm 51:1, NKJV- “To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions.”
We easily forget things. Not only where we laid our keys, cell phone, or the last things we had in our hands, but the love of our heavenly Father. God has had me on this Affirmation of God journey for almost twenty years and in that time, I have collected almost twenty-eight thousand affirmations in a spreadsheet, shared a few thousand blogposts, published two devotionals, and not once have I remembered to say, God, thank You for loving me.
We are not easy to love. Yet here we are with the Creator of the Universe, the LORD of lords, the King of kings loving us. I am thankful for God’s restoration and for the Psalms of David. King David, you know the young boy who slayed Goliath, who became Israel’s greatest king, and even was called a man after God’s own heart, was broken here in Psalm 51. He had just been confronted by Nathan and called out for sleeping with Bathsheba and having her husband Uriah killed in battle. David turned to the only place we must turn today.
When we become lost and overwhelmed and have no other place to turn, our God is always with us. Do we remember to thank God for always being here for us? In reviewing translations of Psalm 51 I do recognize that even the translator’s find numerous ways to put God’s love into words. Sometimes words are not sufficient in describing God and His love for us.
- Unfailing love and great compassion (NIV)
- Steadfast love and abundant mercy (ESV)
- Loving devotion and great compassion (BSB)
- Lovingkindness and multitude of tender mercies (KJV)
- Faithfulness and the greatness of Your compassion (NASB)
However we can say it, our God loves us, even in the worst of our circumstances or consequences. Wherever we find ourselves today. No matter what we have done, we can turn to our LORD as David did in Psalm 51:10 and cry out “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” (KJV)
It is God who restores our spirits and holds us up with His generous Spirit as promised in Psalm 51:12. It is God who gives us our voices to praise Him as promised in Psalm 51:15, He will even open our lips and mouths so we can praise Him. Thank You God for opening my lips and mouth now so I may praise You for Your great love and compassion.
Will you thank God for loving you now?
Today’s Prayer: Almighty God, I find overwhelming joy in Your salvation, love, and compassion for us. Thank You LORD for loving us and forgiving us for our wretched sins. You LORD are our savior and King. In You alone do we find the strength, peace, and Your lovingkindness. Thank You LORD for having mercy on us. Bring us close LORD and use us to teach and share Your endless love for us. Thank You for opening my lips so I may praise You now. Amen.
