Today’s Scripture: John 14:27, NKJV- “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
The peace of Jesus is like no other peace. Since Adam and Eve, humankind has attempted to find peace and power of its own. We do not have to look far to see the chaos and turmoil we do create. Even those seemingly in power show all evidence that they have extraordinarily little peace and are very afraid of losing the power they believe they have.
Jesus was recorded in John 14:1 as stating “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.” (NIV) True peace is found in the heart. Peace is not obtained through the power of humans. In fact, even Jesus made it clear that His peace was the Father in Him. In John 14:10, Jesus stated, “Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me.” (NLT)
The Father God living inside of us. That is the place in our hearts we find and come to know true peace. Here in these verses in John 14, Jesus was teaching His disciples to get away from what they could see, touch, and experience to come to know the presence and power of God within us. Jesus knew this was a foreign concept to the flesh.
In fact, In John 14:11, Jesus implored the disciples and us to simply believe that He was in the Father and the Father was in Him. Jesus does not require us to understand, but only believe, In John 14:17, Jesus takes us to another level. Not a higher level but a deeper level of the Advocate He promised He was leaving with us.
Our helper, the Holy Spirit, is the part of the Trinity that Jesus promised would be with us and in us. John 14:20 takes us beyond human experience. At this juncture we leave the fragility of the flesh and take on the part of being who God created us to be way back in the beginning with Genesis 1:26, “Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” (NIV)
We are made in the image of the Trinity. God the Father, Jesus the Christ who lived in the flesh, and the Holy Spirit. We are made this way. We were not created to only live in the flesh. The worldview that somehow humanity is in control is ludicrous yet lived out daily. So many devoid of being in touch with God strive to have power over themselves and everyone else. They are obviously afraid of losing the power they perceive that they have.
Yet, in John 14:20 Jesus made it clear that “When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.” (NLT). If we care to look, it is clear. Instead of looking to be powerful, we can look towards our hearts where Jesus lives in the form of the Holy Spirit. It is here deep inside of our hearts where we find peace. There is no need to look elsewhere.
As John 14:21 states, we only need to love Jesus and follow His commands. We can do that, right? Can we say together, Jesus, I love You. In this love we find and feel the Spirit of our hearts. It is here where the Spirit of our LORD resides. It is here where we find peace and learn to only fear God. With whirlwinds of activities and evil abounding in the marketplace and halls of justice, we have the peace of the creator of the universe living inside of us. It is here, in our hearts we know the peace of Jesus. The peace He Himself gave to us. Thank You Jesus for living inside of us and for filling us with Your peace. Will you live from your heart of peace today?
Today’s Prayer: Thank You Father God for living in Jesus so that we could also receive Jesus and Your Spirit within us. In our hearts LORD, we find You and Your peace. Thank You Jesus for coming to teach us. Thank You for leaving the Helper who advocates You in us. Help us LORD to keep Your Word. Jesus, I love You and welcome You to come and make Your home within my heart. Holy Spirit please teach us all things and remind us of everything Jesus said to us. In You we find peace. Amen.
