Today’s Scripture: Matthew 4:4, NIV- Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Most of us have experienced the silence of God if we have ever attempted to listen at all. I do recall crying out to God one morning: “God, You say You created me for Your purposes, yet You remain silent; I don’t get it!”
Over the first four chapters of Matthew, we find various ways God does communicate with us. In Matthew 1:20, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. Matthew 1:22 states that these messages were fulfilling messages from God’s prophet Isaiah which we can also read in the Holy Scriptures, the Bible.
Over the past decade or so of my life I have found that I most often hear God in His Holy Scriptures as referred to us in Matthew chapters 1-4. I have not seen a star as the wise men in Matthew chapter 2 or been redirected through dreams by angels. But as Joseph in Matthew 2:13, we can still be led by the words of Hosea.
In Matthew 2:17, we are told that the words of the prophet Jeremiah were fulfilled. Matthew chapter 3 shared that other people come into our lives to lead us a John the Baptist was provided as a messenger of God to introduce Jesus as promised by Isaiah.
The prophets of the scriptures continue to speak to us. As Jesus was led into the wilderness and as we find ourselves in our wilderness we can still be led as Jesus was in Matthew 4. We must live on every word that comes from the mouth of God. These words we must live on come to us by us feeding and consuming the words of God in the scriptures.
I no longer doubt that God speaks. I have found that if we are in a place in our lives where we desire to hear God, we must spend more time reading His scriptures and listening to His prophets and messengers. Are you reading the Bible to hear what God has to say to you?
Today’s Prayer: Father God, thank You for your Holy Scriptures. Thank You for speaking through them to us. Help us to feed on every word Lord God. Please write these words in our hearts, minds, and souls. Thank You for showing Yourself to us in Your Word and I pray we can listen and share Your power and Your voice to others. Give us the courage to act immediately on what we hear from You. Amen.
