Today’s Scripture: Matthew 4:4, NIV- “Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’””
The tempter showed up when Jesus was at his weakest, after forty days of fasting in the wilderness. Our temptations also show up when we are at our weakest. I am often reminded and have proven that the acrostic H.A.L.T.
holds true in recovery and life.
- Hungry
- Angry
- Lonely
- Tired
We often make poor life choices when we are in any of these conditions, so we must guard against the decisions we make when we are hungry, angry, lonely, or tired. The best way to guard our lives and our hearts is by feeding on every word that comes from the mouth of God.
When Jesus stated, “it is written,” He did not need to search the internet to find the answer. He knew it was written in Deuteronomy 8:3. For us to know where “it is written” we must return to God’s Word every day. Just as we eat every day to not be hungry, we must not starve ourselves of God’s Word.
God’s words are where we live a life of protection from the evil one and life’s temptations. As Moses was instructing the people of God in Deuteronomy, He continues to teach us as we are entering the land that God has given us. In Deuteronomy 8:1 Moses wrote, “Be careful to obey all the commands I am giving you today. Then you will live and multiply, and you will enter and occupy the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors.” (NLT)
The commands of the LORD will always teach, protect, discipline, and feed us. As Deuteronomy 8:7 promises, “For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land,” As Deuteronomy 8:10 encourages us, “When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you.” (NKJV)
We should praise God and be careful to obey His commands. We must study and feed on His words daily to live the fullness of life God created us for. Moses knew we would get spoiled and distracted by all that this world offers. In Deuteronomy 8:11, we are told to “Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God.”
As we go to the LORD our God in prayer and read His Word every day, we remember this is where we learn to hear God speaking in His Word to us. Are you protecting your heart, mind, and soul with every word of the LORD our God?
Today’s Prayer: Father God, thank You for Your Spirit and for Your Word. Forgive us, LORD, for our weaknesses and sins. Help us to grow and live on Your every word. Protect us against the tempter. Strengthen us with Your Word to pass our tests. Help us to obey Your commands. We praise You for this land You have given us. May we feast and live off Your every word today and every day. Thank You LORD for allowing us to hear You in Your words. In the name of Jesus Christ and in the memory of the Holy Spirit we do pray. Amen.
