Today’s Scripture: John 4:34, NKJV- “Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.”
Jesus says a mouthful in John 4. As this journey with God often does, Jesus shows up in our lives when we least expect it. He meets us where we are. When the woman at the well in John 4 came to the well, she was simply expecting to draw water to meet her needs.
I came back to John 4 this morning less than a day of discussing these scriptures with my daughter. I am thankful I can discuss life’s journey and my stumbles with my adult children and have them discuss the scriptures with me but that is another story for another day.
It is overwhelming at times to attempt to capture the meaning in Jesus’s words as they are deeper than the well of Jacob where Jesus addressed this Samaritan woman. In John 4:10, Jesus told the woman that if she had only asked Him, He would have given her a living water where she would never thirst again. Her Initial response in John 4:11 was as temporal as many of our initial attempts at understanding Jesus. She asked “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water?”
When we are first introduced to Jesus, we just cannot get our heads around it. Of course, every word of Jesus proves true, and He expanded our mental gymnastics to Spirit and truth. God and Jesus are beyond understanding. In John 4:23-24, Jesus said “But the time is coming—indeed it is here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” (NLT)
We do want to worship God the Father the way He desires, right? Even the disciples were living in the flesh and could not understand why Jesus was not eating food at this time on their journey. Here in John 4:32 Jesus spoke that He had food they knew nothing about. In these few verses, Jesus is blowing open our basic needs of water and bread into God-sized spiritual nutrition.
Like Jesus, we can come to know the power, energy, and purpose of John 4:34, “Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.” When doing the will of God and desiring to finish His work for us becomes our daily motivation and nourishment, the crumbs of this life no longer fulfill us.
As we do the will of God and pray to finish His work, we will be used like this lady at the well who had simply showed up on this day to get water. She had no idea the world would be changed forever because of this trip. As John 4:39 states “Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”” (NIV)
You may tire of me saying this, but I believe many others will also come to believe because of our testimonies if we are committed to doing the will of God and finishing His work. Jesus meets us at the wells of our lives and expands our understanding of Spirit and truth. We do not need to convince others with our words but only direct them to Jesus and plant the seeds that there is a spirit and truth beyond their current understanding that will feed them and this world in unimaginable ways.
Today’s Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Son Jesus Christ who has met with us. May Your Spirit feed and nourish us with Your Spirit and truth. Use our testimonies Father God so others come to believe. Help us LORD to do Your will and to finish the work You have intended for us. In the name of the Living Water and the Bread of Life our Christ we do pray. Amen.
