Today’s Scripture: Ecclesiastes 11:5, NIV- “As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.”
Soloman was the wisest king of all times. He was God’s instrument for the Proverbs. We wrote Ecclesiastes that let us know the vanity of our understanding. As he stated in Ecclesiastes 11:5 we just do not know. We do not understand the works of God who continues to make everything.
In Ecclesiastes 8:17 Soloman states “then I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it.” (NIV) We cannot possibly comprehend God, but we can trust in His ways and provision.
Just as I do not understand how God had me in Ecclesiastes and Job this morning, but I know that He did. I found Job describing the futility of our understanding as Soloman had. In Job 27:14, Job states “Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways, and how small a whisper we hear of Him! But the thunder of His power who can understand?” (NKJV). We listen for His still small voice yet His booming and thundering examples of His power we fail to recognize nor understand.
In Job 28:12, Job asks “But where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?” In Job 28:13 Job says it cannot be found in the land of the living. In Job 28:23, Job states that “God understands its way, And He knows its place.” God alone knows where wisdom and understanding reside. Job 28:28 lets us know that the fear of the Lord is wisdom, and departing from evil is understanding.
In Job 38:4, God asked Job “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me if you have understanding.” If you ever start to believe you know everything or meet someone who does, Job 38 and 39 are very humbling chapters. God is still the God who speaks to us out of the whirlwinds of life and reminds us that we are not God and that He is as He did Job in chapters 40 and 41.
We too are guilty as Job confesses in Job 42:3, that we have talked about things we knew nothing about, things far too wonderful for us to understand. As we confess and pray as Job did, we too will be restored. Our lives will also be blessed as we trust in who God is over our understanding. Let us remember we did not hang this earth or set its limits. We are simply walking and living with God and trusting in His knowledge and His power. Do you understand?
Today’s prayer: Almighty God, I am trusting and relying on Your Wisdom and Understanding. Thank You LORD for the beauty and majesty in Your creation that reminds us of Your glory and humbles us to love and trust You. We cannot fathom all of You, but I am thankful we can know that we can know You. Thank You for the Wisdom You share with us in Your Words so we may walk peacefully and securely in Your Wisdom and understanding. Thank You for humbling us to look to You for wisdom and understanding. Amen.
